Hey people!
I've read a lot of philosophical discourses and Bacon, Hobbs, and
Descartes all spend pages and pages discussing how to know truth. All
of them wind up reasoning themselves into a philosophical hole.
Addressing the impoverished Zoromites, Alma uses a succinct
formula--the front and back of one page--of how we can know something
is true. If we make room for the word, plant it, and not cast it out
(the action), It will sprout, swell, and bring forth fruit (the
power).
We are teaching a young couple who can't seem to reconcile their take
on the Bible and the Book of Mormon. We brought a member to a lesson
and gradually the topic moved back to the doctrine of exaltation. It
got more and more heated and tense. I didn't know what to do. Finally,
Sister Bogardus leaned forward and bore a powerful testimony of the
Book of Mormon. The tension dissipated and everyone went quiet. I
asked him if he was willing to be baptized if the Book of Mormon was
true. He said yes. "Well, Brother Goldsmith, are you willing to try an
experiment?" He was. "Will you study from the Book of Mormon for 30
minutes every day for a week?" He agreed. He also "challenged us to
read from Romans and Galatians for 30 minutes a day for a week. We'll
see who's right--I mean...;)
Have a blessed week!
